The Photographs I Never Took

A blog about moments you regret not capturing and why some memories live only in the mind.

There are a few photographs that tell stories. More than just prints or digital files, they speak of stories about relationships, happiness, and special moments.

However, sometimes we are equipped to capture them forever, and sometimes, during impromptu occasions, we wish we had a camera with us.

There are a few photographs I regret not having taken.

1. The First Time My Daughter Did a Rollover

The first time she mastered a rollover, I was overjoyed. I was standing there clapping, admiring her, and encouraging her so much that I forgot to take a picture.

Later, I regretted not having taken one.

Then I had to wait to capture it when she did it for the second time.

2. When I Was Standing Beside the Missile Man

Oh man! It was a loss for life.

This was when I was doing my postgraduation. We had a college function. The chief guest was Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who is known as the Missile Man of India.

We were standing inches away from him, but for some reason, we were in awe and forgot to take pictures.

For such a gentleman, I am sure he would not have objected to it.

3. The Film Shoot at the Mall

I was passing through a mall, and there was a film shoot in progress.

They were allowing normal traffic to continue so that it would look natural.

But what I missed was taking a picture of the sets, or at least one with the big film stars, even if it was after the shoot.

4. The Last Day With My Best Friend

As I completed my studies and decided to return to my hometown, as expected, there was sadness everywhere.

My best friend and I sat for quite a long time chatting about our first days and where we were now.

But during all those interesting conversations, we missed taking a picture.

Today, she is in a different country, and I wish we had clicked a picture back then.

5. The Rare Bird in the Garden

I visited a garden recently, and there was this beautiful bird, a rare one that I had never seen before, feeling so at home and unperturbed by our presence, roaming around freely.

Soon after, I spotted a peacock in all its glory.

We were so close to it.

I just wished I had my camera in my hand.

6. My Daughter’s First Flight

Sarah took her first flight at a very young age, when she was barely 4 months old.

I remember being more focused on managing the luggage, boarding procedures, and keeping my daughter comfortable than taking photographs. Looking back, I wish I had captured more of those moments. It was her first flight, after all.

7. The Last Photograph With a Loved One

I regret not having a photograph with my uncle, who was suffering from cancer.

Sometimes we never know a photograph will be the last one. There are people we assume we will meet again, moments we think will repeat themselves. Only later do we realize we should have taken that one extra picture.

Conclusion

Looking back, I realize that some photographs remain uncaptured forever. While a camera helps preserve memories, not every memory needs a photograph. Some stay alive in our minds, just as vivid as the day they happened. Those are the photographs I never took.
